Corky52's Guide to Abusive Reviews.

Posted by Fro Apr. 11, 2008 @ 11:26 PM EDT

Corky52's Guide to Abusive Reviews

----------

Abusive Review Guide 1 - A helpful flash that describes what is abusive and what isn't abusive.

Abusive Review Guide 2 - The sequel to the first Abusive Review Guide flash, which contains more information and a small quiz to test your knowledge on the subject.

----------

Here is the place where you want to go to find abusive reviews easier, but remember that not everything here is abusive. More then half of it actually isn't. Use your head when marking things and only mark the reviews that stick out to you.

Please do not post there if you are not contributing by providing a link to abusive reviews. Do not post there to talk about how your whistle status changed. It's really looked down open to post their while not being on topic so just stick to posting links.

-----------

Also, when you write a review you get this little reminder.

If you are giving this submission a low score, please offer constructive criticism that will be useful to the artist. The review space is not a place for you to act like a total asshole. If your review is found to be mean, offensive, or generally not helpful, you will be banned and your account may be terminated. NOTE: Any attempt to promote an outside, unrelated website in this space will result in the deletion of your user account.

-----------

Trust me and many other users if you completely follow these rules by the book you will have a garbage whistle in no time. Think of them as guidelines more than they are rules. Only then will you realize what is really abusive and what isn't.

-----------

First off you need to know that when you get an abusive review right you get a whistle point. When you get one wrong you lose more than 1 whistle point. Nobody knows exactly how many you lose, but you lose more than you gain. When you mark a movie as abusive correctly you get more whistle points than you would if you marked an abusive review correctly, but at the same time if you get it wrong you will lose a larger amount of whistle points.

-----------

Blam this - This will always get deleted so mark it. Be sure not to actually read the review though. If the review says, "I don't think this should be blammed" then obviously it's not abusive. Also, if it's just a very small part of the review and the review gives a constructive review than it won't be deleted.

You suck, your gay, you're a fag, go die in a fire - Anything that attacks the author or calls him names will always get deleted. Usually no matter how constructive the review is it won't matter if it personally attacks the author.

This is stolen - The review space should never be used to say something is stolen, even if it really is stolen. This will always get deleted. If you feel that something is stolen then report it to Wade Fulp.

Chain Mail - Another thing that will get deleted 100 percent of the time. Sometimes only a couple will be deleted if the person has many of them and then an administrator will delete the account instead of having each review deleted individually.

Unrelated Website - Notice I said unrelated. Sometimes people will link to a website where their is a good tutorial that can help the person out. Just like any other type of review just check things out and make sure that the website is actually unrelated.

Flooding - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH AHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Only mark this if it takes up more than four lines and 90 percent of the review space. No less in either just to stay on the safe side. Now if they write a nice constructive review along with the flooding it can be up to the moderator. I'd say leave it alone.

-----------

Other reviews

This sucks, this is gay, this fucking sucks - Only mark these if that's all they say. If the review says, "This is gay" and then goes on about how it could be better then it's probably not going to be deleted ever. People are free to express their opinions on the flash as long as they back it up with ways to improve. Notice that I said express their opinions on the flash and not on the animator.

Old reviews - Just leave them alone. Stick to the new reviews if you really want to help the website out. Punishing someone for something they wrote 5 years ago doesn't really make much sense and it isn't really hurting the flash anymore.

Spam Submissions - Go ahead and mark them. An abusive review is an abusive review. There may be certain circumstances where a mod may be a little lenient, but you won't ever lose whistle points if the review is abusive.

-----------

Now let's move onto marking movies. Be careful, because sometimes you have seen the game somewhere else, but that doesn't mean it is stolen. It could be the person that owns the website actually submitting it to newgrounds or someone has a contract with that website to submit the flashes.

Another thing to be very careful about is when the author comes right out and says it stolen. This is rare, but an author might be saying they stole the movie just for people to mark it wrong and ruin their whistle. It has been done before.

-----------

To finish of the guide I would like to put in the words from a review moderator. Malachy couldn't have said it much better.

abusive reviews should jump off the screen at you just screaming 'I'M ABUSIVE' if you don't notice it as such at a first glance, then don't bother flagging it.

the flagging system is not an instantaneous process. It can take time between you flagging something and it actually being dealt with, from minutes to weeks.

If you have a low whistle level, it may take even longer if you flag something that is NOT abusive, because others probably won't flag those. It takes more than one person to bring a review to our attention, so if you have a low level it still has a way to go before being brought up.

There's no expiration date on your flags. you can flag something wrong the day you first create your account and it might not be dealt with until today or next year after enough people have made the same mistake.

What you lose when you are wrong is more than what you stand to gain if you are right. It's a nasty curve.

Garbage is NOT rock bottom. You can flag yourself into oblivion if you really want to. But since you will have no effect on things with a garbage whistle you'll probably need to have some pretty bad luck to keep losing points.

abusive reviews should jump off the screen at you just screaming 'I'M ABUSIVE' if you don't notice it as such at a first glance, then don't bother flagging it.

Really ancient reviews will never get you negative whistle points. In some cases they are deleted, in others, flags are cleared with no penalty given. In no case will you lose points on an old review. If you see somebody giving off this as some type of fact or rule of the mods, they are talking out of their ass.

That being said, if you really want to help the site out, try to find the most recent of abusive reviews. It doesn't do us any good deleting really old reviews from people who haven't visited the site in years and it's not that nice to ban somebody for something they had done a while ago.

The whistle system was created to help artists. You bring abuse to our attention, and we take it off of a flash to HELP THE AUTHOR. There is absolutely no focus on the those who flag things beyond if you are good at it, you get a better whistle and have more weight when you flag things, and if you're wrong, you get a broken whistle and we don't have to deal with you throwing the wrong stuff at us.

There's no numbers, figures, ratios, graphs or anything known about the whistle system. Liljim made it and he's been tight lipped ever since. We don't know. If somebody is telling you numbers or how many flags gets you to what...they're talking out of their ass and you shouldn't bother listening to them.

I hope this helps you guys out a bit.
