Strongman Comp. Update

Posted by Fro - February 8th, 2021

Read the original post here: https://fro.newgrounds.com/news/post/1139130

Summary: I entered my first strongman competition. Started training and asked for donations. (Which you can help out with here: https://ko-fi.com/thecoachfro)

Now: Since I've started, donators have raised close to $300 for me. So far this has paid for my first competition ($100), my yearly membership fee ($80), some equipment I needed ($90), and a bit of my 2nd competition. (About 10% of the $80)

I talk about how thankful I am for the help on this tweet here:

A few people I'd like to thank, @SevenSeize, @TomFulp, @NickSenny, @nuskoo and others that stayed anonymous. Tom even sent me a shirt, which I will wear during every event that doesn't require my special grip shirt.

My May events:

Log press for reps in 60 seconds (140 pounds)

Car deadlift for reps in 60 seconds (heavy)

Conan Wheel Carry for distance in 60 seconds (400 pounds)

Atlas Stone to shoulder for reps in 60 seconds (165 pounds)

My August events:

Axle press for 1 rep (185 pounds), log press for 1 rep (200 pounds), viking press for reps (220 pounds) (all together for 60 seconds)

Car deadlift for reps in 60 seconds (heavy)

Van push for 60 meters, heavy tire flip back 60 meters (heavy/heavy)

Odd object carry race (6 odd and heavy objects carried for distance and loaded on platform)

Video of me working up to a 200 pound log press:

If you'd like to donate to me, I'll put it to good use! I'll even rep your gaming, music, whatever company if you send me a t-shirt!

PUMP UP THE JAM, PUMP IT UP

2 of the donations I did on behalf of NeonDev, I kept putting his name in but it still posted as nuskoo for some reason.

Ah, thank you! I did notice that name pop up once, but then it reset back to your name for some reason. Thanks @neondev and @nuskoo for the team effort there.

I'm so excited!!!!

Go get'em Dad!

Nice. Is that 200 pound log press part of the equipment you had to buy, or one of the ones you usually borrow? Looks heavy...

That's one that I travel to train with. The equipment that I had to buy were a "grip" shirt that helps me pick up and hold heavy items close to my body and other grip related things. I didn't have to purchase these things, but they'll help me out a lot come competition day.

A log like that would probably cost me about $300, then another $200-$300 for weight to add to it. Not in the budget right now and there's definitely not a good place to store it!

I have thought about just purchasing the log itself and taking it to the gym with me and using their weight. I'm sure they would have no problem with me bringing my own piece of equipment, but it would be a task to put seats down in the vehicle and ride around with it.

I've also thought about storing it in the weight room at the school where I coach, but I just am not too excited about having it in an area where other people can use it. Same concept there. I could very well bring it back and forth and use their weights though as a huge money savings.

When the pandemic clears up enough I've been thinking about starting a strongman's club for the high school athletes to participate in. At that point I might be able to raise some money with the school/kids to get equipment like that so I can train closer to home.

The log itself weighs in at 110 pounds, then you add weight to the sides like a normal barbell. It's 12 inches in diameter and the majority of the lift is the technique of rolling it up your chest with momentum and stabilizing it. Since you get to use the momentum of your legs at any part of the lift you should be able to press more than you can "strict" press. I can strict press 235 (on a great day) so I should be able to log press 250ish some day? I'm still just getting use to the practice of getting the log up to my chest.

Ideal world maybe you'd have a log at home, a log in the weight room, and at least a few logs stashed at your own club where you make a business out of training others whilst training yourself hmm. :P

The Strongman's club sounds like an awesome idea. Must be pretty rare too.

Good to know about the equipment; always interesting to read about this stuff.
